Tips for choosing Camper Van
A campervan, as most of us are aware, is a self-propelled vehicle that also provides sleeping accommodation. A typical campervan is equipped with a small kitchen a refrigerator and a two-three burner gas hob and grill. Power source is usually the dual-voltage lighting which can work off either a dedicated battery (other than the van battery) or through AC power, supplied at a campsite via a hook-up cable. There are some large-sized camper vans that come with a water heater, a portable toilet and even a shower.
The vehicles is recognized in the United States as Class B recreational vehicles and the trend started in the 1950s after Volkswagen commissioned the Westfalia company to use the Kombi version of their Type 2 transporter as the base model for a campervan.
When thinking of hiring a campervan, it is important to consider the vehicle that best suits your needs. It is good to know that most present-day campervans have a few, if not all of the following amenities:
- Gas or electric powered refrigerator
- Gas or electric grill
- Microwave
- Gas or electric powered water heater
- One or more beds, some of which double-up as daytime seating
- Electricity supplied by a separate battery (not vehicle battery) or external hookup
- Toilet with removable disposal tank
- Shower
Some camper vans also feature radio, television aerial/satellite dish, air-conditioning, water storage tank and awning
You will have to of course compare rental charges and satisfy why one vehicle is more expensive than the other one when they both have the same number of berths or the same facilities. Enquire why there is a difference in quotes and ascertain whether it is due to bonds that are needed to insure the vehicle in case of accidents for example. Bonds are refundable, unless there is vehicle damage. Make sure to find out if there any taxes and other rental fees to be paid? Remember to ask this, for some operators cleverly do not quote this up front, to remain competitive.
Depending on the length of your vacation, you need to find out a few more details:
= if children are coming along, then whether additional space or booster seats available
= decide if a toilet and shower necessary
= what is the age and condition of the vehicle? If the age is under 3 years, the vehicle will be a new model, and it might come with latest facilities such as a DVD player, colored TV, etc for better entertainment.
= good to study the suitability of the seating configuration and lay-out of the vehicle
As you may be aware, driving a campervan is quite different from driving a car or any other four wheel vehicle. While choosing the camper van you should check the condition of the campervan and ensure its service record is up to date. Check tires, spare wheels, brakes, warning lights and other accessories of the campervan. Please make it a point to secure all loose items in the campervan before driving.
Camper van hire companies will take care of most of these important factors. However, it is good to make things doubly sure to enjoy a carefree pleasurable trip with a camper van.
